What is Buses-n-Backpacks?

Crossroads, United Church of Christ partnered with Croton Elementary School to create a program that we have called Buses-n-Backpacks. At the end of the school day every Friday ten children that the school has identified as “in need” pick up a backpack that we have filled with food for the child’s whole family for the weekend.  The following week we pick up the empty backpacks and refill them for the next weekend. Currently, we sponsor ten families during the school year.

We are very excited to partner with Second Harvest Food Bank in Melbourne to purchase food for much less than we could at the grocery store.

How can I get involved?

Each week we update a small list of food items that are running low in our food pantry.  We welcome food donations as well as monetary ones.  We need volunteers to check dates and put away any donations received over the weekend; to pick up the empty backpacks at the school and refill them; and to deliver the backpacks to the school. Look for the sign-up sheet in the church lobby.

Matthew 25: 34-40

“…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me”

Simple acts.  Profound effects.
